It has certainly been quite a race so far. Many people who have been rooting for the iPhone all the way will be disappointed to hear that according to the NPD Group, Google’s operating system has beaten Apple in the first quarter US sales results.
It was reported that sales of Android accounted for 28 percent of all smartphone sales during this period with iPhone in at 21 percent. In front of these two with 36 percent of sales was current leader, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry.
The gap seems to be closing between the main players when it comes to overall market share though and while RIM, Apple and Windows Mobile are still ahead of Android according to statistics from ComScore (as of February 2010), the operating system has still had a great quarter.
Apple may have had a flat quarter but the battle is all set to continue at the top however, with the next generation iPhone model expected later this year. Apple hopes to consolidate its 25.4 percent overall share of the smartphone market and prevent its competitors from gaining a foothold.
Meanwhile, sales of the BlackBerry and Windows Mobile are in decline, so they will also want to bounce back quickly. It all promises to be an exciting race to gain a lasting hold of the smartphone market.
